Chapter 45

Cole, do you think we have enough fish?” Naomi paused to count the expected guests again mentally.“Well, if not we’ll just have to make more chicken curry. I have the Coconut Curries and the Cassava Pudding here. Cole, please tell me you remembered the rice platters.”

“Yes, my dear, they are there on the table. There will be more than enough I’m sure.” Her husband yelled from the veranda. As he dressed the tables with lanterns, he could only smile at the thought of the surprise they planned for Aiden. The decision to have a small gathering of a few family members and friends seemed to have changed to an island celebration. There would be a steel drum band and dancers, a DJ and plenty of food. Friends of Aiden’s volunteered to help Cole with setting up a stage. A dance floor and chairs had been provided and set an atmosphere for entertainment.

Naomi had been cooking for two days preparing salads, and fruit platters. The fish would be grilled, and chicken would be barbequed with creole spices. The Mahé Island was known for its nightlife, but nothing would compare to the celebration planned for Cole Tudjal’s son. There would be plenty of Seybrew and Takamaka Rum, Aiden’s favorites.

Once the news of his visit spread, Naomi had been counting guests. Each was told the party was just a small gathering but Aiden’s parents were prepared for more than fifty guests to celebrate his arrival. Tudjal Import and Exports closed early on Friday an extension of Cole’s gratitude for the help he and Naomi received to prepare for the occasion.

Sasha was told to take Aiden and Seychelle to their parent’s home and wait there until she received a call from them. She would simply explain their parents wouldn’t be home until late but asked them to wait until they returned. Sasha thought their plan was simple enough. The party would be at Sasha and Seychelle’s home awaiting their arrival. A second call would be the signal; all was ready.

“Naomi, we have to move all of the food to the veranda. I’ll help you clean the kitchen. It will be obvious something is wrong if we leave a mess.”

“Sasha’s kitchen is a mess. That would be normal.” Naomi laughed as she entered the kitchen and a sigh quickly followed. She glanced at the clock mounted on the wall. There was time; it was early. Their flight would be landing in three hours. Sasha would detain them she hoped for another hour. She would stop to pick up Tristan, and that would delay them for sure. A few of the women from the village would join her to help serve. As she stood to put things in order mentally she had to admit, Cole was right. Neither Sasha nor Seychelle would leave their kitchen in such a condition.

Pots and pans were on the counters joined by mixing bowls and utensils. Naomi couldn’t remember her daughter’s counters ever being full. The island, centered in the middle of the floor, held the desserts.
